What Dries in a News Desert?
by Reese Clarke and Ashley Hinchy
Across northern Arizona, local journalism is shrinking.
Our project explores how a small number of journalists are tasked with covering one of the largest geographic regions in the state. With limited staffing and resources, reporters often travel long distances, balance multiple roles and make difficult decisions about which stories can realistically be covered.
We examine how reduced coverage affects accountability, community awareness and public trust, while also exploring how audiences are turning to alternative sources, such as social media, for information.
We investigate how local news organizations are adapting, such as using digital platforms, to navigate a continuously changing media landscape.
